Description

Solid wood plant labels made from sustainably sourced Scottish larch. I have started to make some plant labels from larch as a cheaper alternative to my oak ones and in larger pack sizes. The main difference is that larch is a softer wood, meaning that these will be slightly less durable and will not last quite as many seasons of reuse. They are vastly superior to the “lollipop sticks” you get in garden centres though, which are not durable at all, and about half the thickness of my labels!

Larch is naturally durable outside and so these will still last several seasons if looked after. Without treatment they will eventually fade to a silvery colour (you can oil or paint them if you want to). At the end of each season simply clean, store somewhere dry and use again next year.

You can write on these with anything really, but we have found that a soft pencil is best, such as a carpenters pencil, and means you can sand them down to be reused. Garden marker pens work well too for a longer lasting label, but it will be more difficult to sand this off for reuse.

These labels are approximately 15cm or 20cm x 2cm (6″ or 8″ x 3/4″). They are very sturdy at around 3mm thick and are a sawn finish, so have the odd mark from this.

Of course these are untreated so can be left to rot down in the garden at the end of their life (they’ll take a while to degrade though as larch is naturally resistant to rot, so don’t bother putting them in the compost bin!)

They are packaged in a cardboard mailing box.
